2012-2013

The activities of 36th Series of SPP started in October 2012. The Council contacted experts from Indian Institute of Science and various R&D institutions in identifying thrust areas for selection of student projects.

Thrust Areas

Following are thrust areas recommended by the experts for student projects.

  • Mechanisms / machines for Garbage disposal specially in the urban environment, Drainage cleaning, Weed removal in lakes, Waste processing and wealth from waste
  • Automobile exhaust control,
  • Greenhouse gas mitigation,
  • Air pollution control
  • Application of Electrostatics, Electrostatic Hazards
  • Material processing, aero space materials
  • Cyber Physical Systems (CPS)
  • Experimental fluid mechanics
  • Solar thermal energy devices
  • Self powered electronics
  • Health monitoring systems
  • Low power embedded system
  • Efficient, swift fire fighting/extinguishing gadgets
  • Any other innovative projects

Facts and Figures

The Council received 1414 project proposals from various disciplines from 121 institutions in the State. These proposals were scrutinized by experts from Indian Institute of Science and other R&D institutions. After rigorous processing, 363 proposals from 98 engineering colleges were supported and sponsored with a total financial assistance of about Rs. 18.27 Lakhs. Additionally KSCST & Karnataka State Bio-fuel Development board (KSBDB) jointly supported 46 projects biofuel / bioenergy area.

Demonstration of the implemented projects were evaluated by experts. Based on methodology and final output, 79 projects were selected for Seminar and 107 for Exhibition.

Seminar

The Council organised the 36th Series Seminar and Exhibition on 30th and 31st August 2013, at Angadi Institute of Technology & Management, Belgaum. The programme was inaugurated on 30th August 2013 at 10.00 AM by Padmashri Dr. T. S Prahlad, Distinguished Scientist and Former Director, National Aerospace Laboratories, Bangalore. Sri. Rajendra Harkuni, President, Belgaum Chamber of Commerce and Industries, Belgaum addressed the gathering and released the SPP Engineering Compendium. Prof. V R Ananthan, Vice Chancellor, Rani Chennamma University, Belgaum was the guest of honor and released SPP Compendium on Biofuel Projects. Sri. C. C. Angadi, President, Angadi Institute of Technology and Management Trust, Belgaum presided over the function. Prof. S. Mohan Kumar, Secretary and Dr. M. Prithviraj, Executive Secretary, KSCST participated in the programme and encouraged the young engineers to take up more R&D related activities.

Seminars and Exhibition of selected projects were held in those two days. The projects exhibited were evaluated by a panel of scientists and engineers from Indian Institute of Science and National Aerospace Laboratories, Bangalore and other research organizations. In addition to these, special lectures were arranged. Dr. Mangala Sunder Krishnan, Dept. of Chemistry, Indian Institute of Technology, Madras delivered technical lecture on "ICT enabled teaching-learning strategies in science and engineering" on 30th August 2013. Technical lectures continued on 31st August 2013 with Padmashri Dr. T. S Prahlad, Distinguished Scientist and Former Director, National Aerospace Laboratories, Bangalore, delivering technical lecture on "Indian Aerospace Scenario" and Dr. Mohan Kumar delivering a technical lecture on "Towards Sustainable Urban Water Supply and Management".

Award

Valedictory programme was held on 31st August 2013 at 3.30 PM. Prof. S. Sreenivasa Murthy, Vice Chancellor, Central University of Karnataka, Gulbarga was the Chief Guest. Sri. Y. B. Ramakrishna, Former Executive Chairman, Karnataka State Biofuel Development Board, was the guest of honor. Dr. U. S. Hampannavar, Principal and Director Angadi Institute of Technology & Management, Belgaum presided over the function. Total of 13 projects was selected as best seminar projects and 16 projects as best exhibit project of the year by a panel of experts. Under biofuel projects four projects was adjudicated as best projects and awarded.Prizes were distribued to award winning projects and colleges. The best performing college of the year award went to B. V. Bhoomaraddi College of Engineering and Technology, Hubli.
