Co-ordinator

STUDENT PROJECT PROGRAMME (SPP)

One of the major objectives of the Council has been to improve the quality of education in our colleges and in view of this the Student Project Program (SPP) was started during 1978 - 79 to sponsor engineering student projects. This innovative program has been playing a very important role in engineering education for last thirty nine years and has become a flagship program of the Council. Innovation and technology are needed to transform our nation from reliance on exploitation of natural resources which are non-renewable and finite to technological innovation as basis for sustainable and all round development. Recognizing this need, the Council initiated the Student Project Program, popularly known as SPP, as early as 1977. The main purpose of this Program is to bring out the hidden talent and innovative spirit of young engineers graduating from colleges across the State. Under this Program, the Council has been providing both technical and financial support to selected projects undertaken by the final year engineering students of Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) and of other engineering colleges. Thus the Council has been playing a crucial role in building confidence and enhancing the capabilities of engineers graduating from the colleges in the State. So far KSCST has conducted 39 Series of events in the SPP, since its inception supporting more than 9000 projects for the Engineering and Science Students.

Many projects, sponsored in this program, deal with technology applications very relevant to the State. This process has been ably assisted by more than one hundred faculty members of the Indian Institute of Science, NAL and experts from various other research institutions and government departments. The Student Project Program of KSCST has attracted the attention of educationists and technologists in the entire country.

For the 40th series (2016-2017) of this Program, activities of which were initiated in September 2016, the Council has received 2317 B.E project proposals and 32 M.Tech project proposals from 145 engineering colleges and universities across the state. A total of 542 projects (536 BE Projects and 6 M.Tech Projects) were recommended by the experts. In the Biofuel / Bioenergy area Council received 137 projects (105 BE projects, 9 M.Tech projects, 18 M.Sc., projects and 5 MBA projects). After the evaluation KSCST has supported 85 projects under Biofuel / Bioenergy area (59 BE projects, 7 M.Tech projects, 14 M.Sc., projects and 5 MBA projects). A total of 627 projects from more than 150 institutions were supported by the Council for the 40th Series of SPP.

The work discipline acquired by students in evolving and executing their projects, improves their analytical and technical capabilities and methodology, enabling better performance at job interviews, besides getting a formal certificate of recognition. The sponsorship, by Karnataka State Council for Science & Technology, has become a benchmark of quality for engineering student projects and these projects have been highly valued by both academic and industrial communities.

In this program, several completed projects are identified as promising and having commercial potential. Concerned faculty/students of such projects are encouraged to go ahead for further modification wherever required and to take-up field trials or scale up. Projects have been diverse, reflecting the varied interests of the students/guides and some of them have been very innovative.

40th Series of Student Project Programme (SPP) :

SPP, when started in the year 1977-78, supported 81 projects, from 13 institutions. The Council received 2349 project proposals from various disciplines from over 145 engineering colleges in the State during the 40th Series (2016-2017) of this program. These project proposals were scrutinized by experts from Indian Institute of Science, NAL and other institutions and have approved 542 project proposals under this 40th Series of SPP with a grant support of Rs. 25.92 Lakhs. Out of these projects 169 have been selected for Exhibition and 163 projects for Seminar. The group of students will demonstrate these projects. Some of these projects have the potential for becoming commercial/industrial ventures.

As per the recommendations of the subject experts, SPP project proposal thrust areas information were sent to all engineering colleges and updated in KSCST website.

The following were the thrust areas recommended by the experts to submit the student project proposals for the 40th series of SPP.

KSCST had invited Project proposals under two categories in Stream A and stream B.

STREAM A :

The submitted projects should be selected from the list of "best projects of the year award" and the deliverables should clearly indicate the improvement / additional development made with respect to the selected project. KSCST has prepared such "best projects list" for the last five years ((35th Series - 2011-2012 to 39th Series - 2015-2016) and students should look into this list and prepare the proposal.

The details of the Awarded projects are hosted in the KSCST - SPP Website.

The project report details can be obtained from http://www.kscst.iisc.ernet.in/sppArchive/public/index.php

STREAM B :

The Projects under the areas mentioned by KSCST.

KSCST has identified the following Areas for the student's project proposal:

1. Providing solution for conversion of the solid wastes into briquettes / Pellets.
2. Utilizing solar power for de-frothing the lakes.
3. Utilizing solar power for desalination: bench-scale demonstration.
4. Utilizing solar power for flue-gas / auto-exhaust cleaning.
5. Exploring new applications for agriculture / mariculture waste.
6. Intelligent inverters for roof top solar panels connected to grid.
7. Different technologies for rejuvenating the water sources.
8. Application of robotics in disaster management.
9. Enhancing battery life for portable devices.
10. Development of technologies for water purification.
11. Intelligent Fire Extinguishing Systems
12. Maintenance and safety technologies for high rise buildings.
13. Application of Nano technology in Health, Water and Agriculture.
14. Mobile Applications: Disaster Management, Disease Management & Education.
15. Identifying Network and other Software stacks for Free RTOS or any other Real Time Operating System for Embedded Systems from already available open source.
16. Power monitoring and possibly controlled socket with IoT connectivity to aggregate to specific building or locations.
17. Low cost LCD / LED based Name Display board with network connectivity for use in conferences and seminars etc.
18. Sound alarm detector which will then convey this alarm over wireless to receiver with a contact within a range of 250 mtrs. The sound detector and transmitter is battery operated and should run over a year on a button cell.

SPP Website contains, in addition to thrust areas, format of the proposal and other relevant details. Posters were sent to all the engineering colleges of the State and Universities, indicating last date for submission of the project proposals.

The Council received 2349 project proposals from various disciplines from over 145 engineering colleges in the State during the 40th Series (2016-2017) of this program (Annexure 1). These project proposals were scrutinized by experts from Indian Institute of Science, NAL and other institutions and have approved 542 project proposals under this 40th Series of SPP with a grant support of Rs. 25.92 Lakhs. Project sanction letters and budget sanction details were sent to the concerned project guides and Principals of the engineering colleges.

SPP - Biofuel / Bioenergy SPP projects

Council and Karnataka State Bio-energy Development Board (KSBDB), GoK are jointly supporting B.E, M. Tech, M.Sc., and MBA students to take up research projects in the Biofuel / Bioenergy area. KSCST & KSBDB, had sent a poster consisting of thrust areas for students to take up project. KSCST received 136 student project proposals (104 BE projects, 9 M.Tech projects, 18 M.Sc., projects and 5 MBA projects) from various colleges across the state under SPP Biofuel / Bioenergy area (Annexure 2). These project proposals were evaluated by the experts and they have selected 85 projects for the sponsorship (59 BE projects, 7 M.Tech projects, 14 M.Sc., projects and 5 MBA projects). The nodal centre evaluation of Biofuel projects was held at R. V. College of Engineering, Bangalore on 25th May 2017. A total of 85 projects were evaluated and 54 projects were selected for Seminar and Exhibition.
