REPORT ON 39th SERIES of
STUDENT PROJECT PROGRAMME (SPP)

STUDENT PROJECT PROGRAMME (SPP)
One of the major objectives of the Council
has been to improve the quality of education in our colleges
and, in view of this, the Student Project Programme (SPP) was
started during 1978-1979 to sponsor engineering student projects.
This innovative programme has been playing a very important role
in engineering education sector for last thirty nine years and
has become a flagship programme of the Council. Many projects,
sponsored in this programme, deal with technology applications
very relevant to the State. During the 39th series
(2015-2016) of this programme, activities of which were
initiated September 2015, a total of 636 projects from more than
140 institutions were sponsored by the Council.
The
Student Project Programme has, by now, stimulated a large number
of students and faculty to think about the problems of their
immediate surroundings and to use their knowledge and training
to improve their environment. This process has been ably
assisted by more than one hundred faculty members of the Indian
Institute of Science and experts from various other research
institutions and government departments. Engineering colleges of
the State have shown keen interest in this novel programme. The
Student Project Programme of KSCST has attracted the attention
of educationists and technologists in the entire country.
The objectives are:
-
Apply creativity of students to solve
development problems of our people and State through Science and
Technology.
-
Enrich college education by taking up
small projects to evolve solutions to real life problems.
-
Improve understanding and develop
methodology for solving complex issues.
The
work discipline acquired by students in evolving and executing their
projects, improves their analytical and technical capabilities and
methodology, enabling better performance at job interviews, besides getting
a formal certificate of recognition. The sponsorship, by Karnataka State
Council for Science & Technology, has become a benchmark of quality for
engineering student projects and these projects have been highly valued by
both academic and industrial communities.
In
this programme, several completed projects are identified as promising and
having commercial potential. Concerned faculty/students of such projects are
encouraged to go ahead for further modification wherever required and to
takeup field trials or scale up. Projects have been diverse, reflecting the
varied interests of the students/guides and some of them have been very
innovative. The recent enhancement of financial support by the state
government has enabled us to support several such innovative projects and
some of these projects have received wide publicity in local as well as
national media.
39th Series of Student Project
Programme (SPP) :
SPP,
when started in the year 1977-1978, supported 81 projects, from 13
institutions. Now, during the 39th Series (2015-2016) of this program, the
Council received 2275 project proposals from various disciplines from over
140 engineering colleges in the State. These project proposals are
scrutinized by experts from Indian Institute of Science, NAL and other
institutions and has approved 568 project proposals under this 39th Series
of SPP with a total grant support of Rs. 27.96 Lakhs.
So
far, over 8000 projects have been supported by the KSCST under this
programme during last 39 years.
The activities of 39th Series of SPP
started in September 2015. The Council contacted experts from Indian
Institute of Science and various R&D institutions in identifying thrust
areas for selection of student projects.
As per
the recommendations of the subject experts and approval by Secretary, KSCST,
SPP poster was printed in A3 size which displayed information about the
thrust areas for this series.

Following are thrust areas recommended by the experts for student projects.
-
Mechanisms / machines for Waste
disposal / treatment technologies - Conventional / Alternative, Drainage
cleaning, Weed removal in lakes, Waste processing technologies, Cleaning
mechanisms for high-rise buildings.

SPP
poster contains, in addition to thrust areas, format of the proposal and
other relevant details. Posters were sent to all the engineering colleges of
the State and Universities, indicating last date for submission of the
project proposals.
The
Council received 2278 project proposals from various disciplines from 144
institutions in the State (Annexure 1). These proposals were scrutinized by
experts from Indian Institute of Science and other R&D institutions. After
rigorous processing of the project proposals and evaluation by experts, 568
projects from 130 engineering colleges were supported and sponsored with a
total financial assistance of about Rs. 27.96 Lakhs. Project sanction
letters and budget sanction details were sent to the concerned project
guides and Principals of the engineering colleges.

SPP - Biofuel /
Bioenergy SPP projects
Council and Karnataka
State Bio-energy Development Board (KSBDB) are jointly supporting
Engineering, M. Tech, M.Sc., and MBA students to take up research projects
in the Biofuel / Bioenergy area. Under the 39th Series of Student
Project Programme, KSCST & KSBDB, had sent a poster consisting of thrust
areas for students to take up project. KSCST received 146 student project
proposals (100 BE projects, 16 M.Tech projects, 23 M.Sc., projects and 6 MBA
projects) from various colleges across the state under SPP Biofuel /
Bioenergy area (Annexure 2). These project proposals were evaluated by the
experts and they have given their opinion for sponsorship / rejection on
each of the projects. 68 projects (41 BE projects - Rs. 4,00,000/-, 9 M.Tech
projects - Rs. 1,06,500/-, 13 M.Sc., projects - Rs. 1,54,000/- and 5 MBA
projects - Rs. 46,000/-) were supported totaling to Rs. 7,06,500/- (Rupees
Seven Lakhs Six Thousand Five Hundred). The Karnataka State Bio-Energy
Development Board, Government of Karnataka has approved and sanctioned an
amount of Rs. 10.00 Lakhs to the Council for this activity. The nodal centre
evaluation of Biofuel projects were held at Siddaganga Institute of
Technology, Tumkur on 18th May 2016. Shri S. N. Sondur, Fellow,
KSCST is co-ordinating the Biofuel SPP programme. A total of 68 projects
